About Zamani Coffee Ltd

Background

In the heart of East Africa, where the green hills of Uganda rise to meet the sky, a legacy of coffee growing thrives—one that’s as rich and resilient as the land itself. Founded in 2022, Zamani Coffee emerged from humble beginnings as a small trading company with a simple, yet powerful vision: to honour the deeply rooted heritage of Ugandan coffee while empowering the farmers who cultivate it.

The name Zamani is a tribute to the past, symbolising the timeless legacy of coffee in this beautiful region. Across languages—from Swahili to Arabic to Turkish—it means “time” or “something treasured from the past.”
In Uganda, coffee is more than just a crop; it’s a part of life, history, and culture. For generations, coffee has been central to the Ugandan way of life—from the coffee bean friendship blood oath to coffee-chewing rituals for energy on long hikes in the 1800s. This ancient crop, grown in the lush landscapes of Mt. Elgon, is a symbol of connection, resilience, and community.
Long before coffee became a global commodity, it was a cultural cornerstone in East Africa. Communities celebrated the crop with traditions like the coffee-bean friendship blood oath, a ritual symbolising trust and unity, and used coffee for energy on long journeys by chewing the raw beans.
The legacy of coffee in Uganda is also tied to the country’s economic and social history. For over 80 years, coffee has been the nation’s oldest and most significant commercial crop, supporting approximately 2 million households. It has fueled trade, shaped livelihoods, and created a vibrant culture of resilience and craftsmanship.
"Zamani" encapsulates this incredible journey—celebrating the origins of Robusta coffee, the tradition and culture of its cultivation, and the rich history of its trade. We believe in empowering growth—not just in the coffee beans we produce, but in the people who grow them, by working closely with small-scale elderly farmers in the Mt. Elgon region.

Our Story

Marvin Nkore, the visionary founder of Zamani Coffee, grew up surrounded by the rich aroma of coffee and the vibrant landscapes of his family’s farm. From a young age, Marvin witnessed first-hand the dedication, resilience, and sheer hard work it takes to cultivate high-quality coffee. The early mornings spent among lush green coffee trees and the rhythmic process of harvesting cherries shaped his deep connection to the land and its people.

Coffee was not a crop like any other—it was a lifeline for Marvin’s family and many others. It was the proceeds from coffee sales that paid for Marvin’s school fees and countless others in his community. This crop, nurtured by the hands of small-scale farmers, held the power to transform lives, offering opportunities and hope for a brighter future.

Learning the craft from his parents and elders, Marvin mastered the art of growing, harvesting, and processing coffee beans. But beyond the techniques, he gained an appreciation for the invisible costs—time, energy, and love—that farmers pour into every cherry. He saw the pride in their faces when the crop thrived, and the struggle they endured when prices fell short of their labour’s worth.

This personal connection to farming ignited Marvin’s mission: to bridge the gap between farmers and fair markets.

He recognised that behind every cup of coffee is a story—a story of perseverance, family, and tradition. Marvin wanted to ensure that the people at the heart of these stories, the farmers, were celebrated and fairly rewarded for their invaluable contribution.

Driven by this purpose, Marvin founded Zamani Coffee not just as a business, but as a movement to empower small-scale farmers. He wanted to bring Ugandan coffee to the global stage while honouring the heritage, skill, and effort of the hands that grow it.

True quality is born from passion, fairness, and a commitment to uplifting others—and you can enjoy that in every cup of Zamani Coffee.
